Abstract

Heavy Grignard reagent: Despite the low reactivity of the calcium metal and the high reactivity of the resulting CaC bonds, the synthesis of mesitylcalcium iodide (see structure: purple I, orange Ca, red O, gray C) succeeded at very low temperatures. This compound decomposes by ether cleavage and rearrangement to the 3,5-dimethylbenzylcalcium iodide, even at low temperatures.
