ABSTRACT Amethod for using the finite element approach to analyze drip irrigation submain units was developed. The method is based on the iterative solution of a set of linearized flow equations. Either the Darcy-Wiesbach or the Hazen-Williams equations can be used. The finite element method results in a symmetric banded matrix which requires minimal computer storage. The advantages of this technique include, possible implementation through existing finite element computer programs, simplicity of application, to large irrigation hydraulic networks, quickness of convergence and the potential for use with small computers.
