The ionic methods meant to fit a linear macromolecule with an end-standing polymerizable unsaturation are reviewed in this paper. The versatility of these methods and their ability to yield species of molecular weight chosen at will and of low polydipersity are of great interest in this matter. A large number of well-defined macromonomers, covering the molecular weight range of interest (103 to 104), have been obtained ionically. An adequate characterization of the species obtained is required to establish whether the functionalization reaction is reliable and quantitative and whether the molecular weights obtained are in good agreement with the values expected.
