Increased activities of liver enzymes \nsuch as aspartate aminotransferase \n(AST), alanine aminotransferase \n(ALT), and -glutamyltranspeptidase \n(GGT) are indicators of hepatocellular injury. \nIncreased activity of these markers is \nassociated with insulin resistance (1), \nmetabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes \n(2–9). However, most of these studies \nwere performed in Western countries (2– \n5,7,9), and the two studies from Japan \nand Korea were not community based \n(6,8). In this prospective communitybased \nstudy, we evaluated the relationships \nbetween markers of liver function \nand the onset of type 2 diabetes after adjusting \nfor potential risk factors including \ninflammatory markers.
