Abstract Autotrophic growth of the unicellular green algae Chlorella emersonii, Chlorella vulgaris, and a strain isolated in our laboratory named VT-1, was carried out in presence of pentachlorophenol. Pentachlorophenol was dissolved in pure methanol and applied in a concentrations range from 0 to 40 mg l−1. The growth of Chlorella emersonii was highly sensitive to pentachlorophenol, but VT-1 was more tolerant to pentachlorophenol with an IC50 value of 25–26 mg l−1.
