The findings of the present study suggest the following: (1) the focus for hypertensive elderly and diabetic patients should be on primary prevention of HHF,(2) more intensive management with noninvasive positive pressure ventilation should be performed at the urgent stage, (3) it is necessary to clarify the clinical benefit of carperitide and angiotensin-receptor blockers, because they are commonly used in Japan, and (4) it is necessary to clarify the relationship between in-hospital mortality and length of stay from the viewpoint of both outcome and cost of patient care.
