Summary. It is demonstrated that some synthetic anticoagulants of the polysaccharid sulfuric acid ester group (chitin, cellulose and starch sulfuric acid esters) on intravenous injection in rabbits produce an agglutination of the thrombocytes and reduce the number of circulating platelets. This effect is of rather short duration and completely reversible. The toxicity of these substances reported by some authors may be due to the phenomenon demonstrated here. The mucoitin polysulfuric acid ester (heparin) found in the animal organism does not have the same effect on the thrombocytes.
