Dense phytoplankton blooms often accompany the receding ice and may persist in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) for several weeks, extending for up to 200 n miles in width It has been suggested that production associated with the MIZ may contribute between 40 and 60% to the annual primary production of the Southern Ocean (Smith & Nelson 1986
