Typhoid Fever Complicated by Hepatitis, Nephritis, and Thrombocytopenia

Abstract

A patient with documented typhoid fever manifested several very severe and unusual complications. These included (1) typhoid hepatitis characterized histologically by "Mallory nodules" and clinically by profound jaundice and hepatic encephalopathy, (2) acute renal failure with histological findings suggestive of typhoid nephritis, and (3) symptomatic thrombocytopenia. Typhoid as a cause of acute pyrexial disorders remains an important entity in the United States.
