Abstract Azimuthal anisotropy of a nematic liquid crystal alignment was caused by exposing 6-nitrospirobenzopyran monolayer to linearly polarized UV light. The photo-induced in-plane alignment was scarcely altered after prolonged storage at an ambient temperature.
