Abstract

Patrick Carnes (1989) Carnes, P. J. 1989. Contrary to love: Helping the sexual addict, Minneapolis, MN: CompCare Publishers. [Google Scholar] developed the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST) to identify individuals at risk for sexual addiction. Using two groups of veterans from an addictions treatment program (N = 313, N = 316), this research explored the psychometric properties of the SAST and explored the feasibility of reducing the length of the SAST. Results suggested that the SAST measured a single construct with excellent reliability and acceptable convergent and divergent validity. Examination of the shortened SAST provided some initial support for a six-item SAST version. Finally, a wide-ranging pattern of significant correlations between personality disorders and sexual addiction emerged.
