Abstract

[reaction: see text] A novel 2-pyridone synthesis via nucleophilic addition of malonic esters to alkynyl imines has been developed. The reaction of dialkylalkyl sodiomalonates with alkynyl imines provided 2-pyridones in good to excellent yields.
