Abstract

In October and November of 1945 a collection of was made on Attu Island by Margaret Bell Howard, and turned over to the U. S. National Museum. It was sent to us for determination, and returned to the museum. Nearly all species were named by Dr. Clark. Many of the packets were scant in material, and often two to five species were intermingled as is common with smaller Hepaticae. The species were mostly those which would strike the eye readily on account of size or color. Some collections of Pellia were undeterminable since the recognition of one species requires reproductive characters. The collection was the more interesting to us because we have recently published material (5) on a similar collection by Robert M. Hardy from the same island during the same year. The following is Howard's list, with comments. No geographic distribution is given, but other near collections are usually mentioned. The authority for the names when not given is that of Frye and Clark's Hepaticae of North America.
