The selections included in this anthology centre on three major aspects of women's writing: reflections on writing and its relation to the public self, the figuration of a female textual identity, and women as agents of history and ideology. The material is drawn from a wide range of sources, including fiction and poetry, excerpts from the testimonial writing of peasant women, labour and social activists and women writing about literature and the craft of writing.
