Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract

This is the second edition of a textbook that remains one of the most comprehensive books on the physiology of the gastrointestinal system. That the editors undertook this mammoth task only five years after the last edition is a tribute to all the contributors and reflects the rapid progress in research in this area. The editors aimed this work at investigators in the field and speculate that it may have use for clinicians and graduate students. Unless the clinicians are involved in research or the teaching of physiology, I suspect that the detail in which the topics are covered would not make this an attractive reference source for them. The first volume addresses regulation of gastrointestinal function and includes chapters on histochemistry, physiology of neuropeptides, neurophysiology of the enteric nervous system, endocrine cells and gastrointestinal hormones, prostanoids, and cell differentiation and growth in the small intestine.
