Abstract

Two experimental models for the study of band keratopathy in the rabbit eye are presented. In one, band keratopathy will result 100% of the time in an eye with immunogenic uveitis after the animal has been systemically intoxicated with calciferol. The type of calcification in this model is best explained by the theory of calciphylaxis. Hypercalcemia and ultraviolet radiation are not involved in the production of this lesion. Lid closure will prevent its development. In the second model, band keratopathy will develop in 35.2% of rabbit eyes injected with polyethylene sulfonic acid in rabbits depleted of vitamin D. Theories involved in the production of both models are discussed.
