Abstract A single integral equation (SIE) method is developed to analyze the electromagnetic scattering from 3D composite conducting and dielectric bodies. Compared with the conventional coupled integral equation (CIE) method, the SIE method reduces the number of unknowns by a factor of two for dielectric surfaces and has faster convergence for an iterative solution. The multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is incorporated to reduce the computing complexity and memory requirement. The numerical results show that the proposed SIE‐MLFMA method is accurate and efficient. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
