Abstract

The first exclusive breakup measurements for the nucleus $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ are presented. Breakup via several discrete states is observed following scattering off $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$. The results support the prediction of a recent microscopic cluster calculation for a strong $n+^{8}\mathrm{Be}({2}^{+})$ state component in the second excited state.
