Austenitic stainless steel was prepared by laser melting. High resolution transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry confirmed homogeneous dispersion of the <italic>in situ</italic> formed oxide nanoinclusions with average size less than 50 nm in the steel matrix.
