Abstract Remote sensing techniques are discussed in the context of environmental studies with emphasis on soil survey in arid and semi‐arid lands. The remote sensing techniques are treated with reference to multispectral, multistation‐ and multitemporal observation. The capability of remote sensing for the study of four environmental items is considered, these items being: hydrology, land cover, land degradation and soils. Physiography in general and land surface properties in particular are considered essential for interpretation. Finally, recent developments, research needs and priorities in resource management are discussed.
