Abstract Proteinaceus cell wall from an acido-thermophilic archaebacteria, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, contains two glycoproteins of molecular weight 40 000 and 100 000 as major subunits. Glucose and mannose were major carbohydrate components. The cell wall proteins were rich in hydrophobic amino acid residues. In the electron microscopy, a hexagonal array was seen on the surface of the isolated cell wall as well as the intact cell.
