Electroplated cobalt film for perpendicular magnetic recording medium

Abstract

In this letter, we report that pure cobalt can be prepared with the easy axes of magnetization normal to the film plane. This unusual condition is achieved through an electroplated columnar growth that produces needlelike crystallites with their hexagonal close-packed (hcp) c axes parallel to the growth direction. The magnetic properties of these films make them ideal candidates for vertical magnetic recording.
