Abstract

Compared with the previous decade, the prevalence of blindness attributable to diabetes has decreased in the population with diabetes, with a trend towards a decrease in its incidence. This may be a consequence of an increased denominator population, resulting from better recording of diabetes and changes to the diagnostic criteria. Over the decade 2000-2009, the incidence of blindness attributable to diabetes fell by a mean of 10.6% per year in the population with diabetes.
