Abstract

Abstract Measurements of the complex dielectric constant have been carried out for solutions of polyvinyl acetate in toluene at concentrations ranging from about 5 to about 11 g/100 ml, at temperatures ranging from 235 to 261° K. The molecular weights of the polymer samples were 22, 65, 100, and 200 times 10 4 . These samples were characterized by viscosimetry, osmometry, light‐scattering and dissymmetry. It is found that the dipole moment of the molecule is proportional to the root mean square end‐to‐end distance and to the square root of the molecular weight. The frequency at which the loss curve has its maximum is independent of molecular weight, in contradistinction to the results predicted by Kirkwood and Fuoss and by Kuhn. This result can, however, be explained on the basis of the simple model used by Bueche and by Rouse.
