Investigation of the antibacterial activity of nalidixic acid against Escherichia coli harbouring various R-factor plasmids has shown that several unrelated R-factors confer an increased susceptibility to the drug. This increase in susceptibility results from an increase in the permeability of the cell wall facilitating an increased uptake of the drug.
