Abstract

300 consecutive cases in women complaining of vaginal discharge were investigated. The commonest causes of the discharge were Trichomonas vaginalis Candida albicans and Neisseria gonorrhea. Repeated bacteriological tests were necessary to demonstrate those cause of the discharge in many of the patients particularly those with gonorrhea; cultures were found to give more positive results than stained smears. Cervical cytology a bimanual pelvic examination urine tests for protein and sugar and serological tests for syphilis should be carried out in all cases of vaginal discharge. Empirical treatment of this condition should not be practiced. Better diagnostic methods are needed.(AUTHORS MODIFIED)
