Surprisingly stable are the first cluster-containing molecular wires prepared by self-assembly of hexaruthenium cluster anions with silver cations. X-ray characterization reveals a unique structure with infinite, heteroleptic metal–metal bonded anionic chains (see picture) that are isolated by layers of counterions.
