A Blood Group B Gene with Variable Expression

Abstract

Summary A woman of group B was found to have a B antigen slightly weaker than normal. She has anti‐B in her serum which agglutinates normal B cells but not her own. She secretes a little B substance in her saliva. Her sister has a similar red cell antigen but no detectable anti‐B, and she also secretes a little B substance. The daughter of the fist woman is of group A 1 B, with a very weak B antigen, much weaker than that of her mother and aunt. She is a non‐secretor of ABH. The same B gene must be present in all three genotypes but expresses itself much more strongly when combined with an O gene than with an A 1 gene. Résumé On a trouvé chez une femme de groupe B un antigène B un peu plus faible que la normale. Elle a de I'anti‐B dans son sérum qui agglutine les érythrocytes B normaux, mais pas les siens. Elk secrète un peu de substance B dans sa salive. Sa sceur a un antigène érythrocytaire similaire, mais pas d'anti‐B; elle secrète également un peu de Substance B. La fille de la première femme est de groupe A 1 B avec un antigène B très faible, beaucoup plus faible que celui de la mère et de la tante. Elle est non secrétrice ABH. Le même gène B doit être présent dans tous les trois génotypes, mais s'exprime beaucoup plus fortement quand il est combiné avec un gène O que lorsqu'il est combiné avec un gène A 1 . Zusammenfassung Bei einer Frau mit der Blutgruppe B war die B‐Eigenschaft gegenüber der Norm etwas schwächer ausgeprägt. Ihr Serum enthielt einen Anti‐B‐Antikörper, der normale B‐Zellen, nicht aber ihre eigenen agglutinierte. Ihr Speichel enthielt eine geringe Menge B‐Substanz. Ihre Schwester wies eine ähnliche, schwache B‐Eigenschaft auf. Ihr Serum enthjelt jedoch kein Anti‐B. Auch sie schied im Speichel nur wenig B‐Substanz Bus. Die Tochter der Probandin wies die Blutgruppe A 1 B auf. Bei ihr war die B‐Eigenschaft deutlich schwächer ausgeprägt als bei ihrer Mutter und der Tante. Sie war Nichtausscheiderin für ABH. In allen 3 Genotypen liegt zweifelsohne dasselbe B‐Gen vor. Dessen Expressivität ist in Kombination mit dem O‐Gen weit stärker als in Kombination mit dem Gen A 1 .
