Abstract

Having reviewed the initial volume,<i>Substance Abuse: Clinical Problems</i><i>and Perspectives</i>, I was pleased to find that the second edition of this work,<i>Substance Abuse: A Comprehensive Textbook</i>, has continued the tradition of excellence established in the first work. The explosive growth of knowledge in this field is accurately reflected in the breadth and depth of the topics covered in this volume. As in the original work, there are 11 parts expanded to contain 80 chapters. The first part gives us historical background and epidemiological perspectives on alcohol and drug abuse. In part 2 are discussed the determinants of substance abuse, with excellent coverage of biopsychosocial components, including genetics, psychobiology, conditioned responses, and psychodynamic and sociocultural aspects. Part 3 includes a comprehensive discussion of the various substances of abuse, including chapters on eating disorders and anabolic steroids.
