Diamagnetic shifts and pronounced effects of mixing between the magnetic sublevels of configurations of differing 1 and n have been observed in the principal series of Ba i, photographed in absorption to about the n = 75 member with a 30-foot spectrograph. An unexpected feature of the spectra is the presence of almost equally spaced absorption maxima, in o--polarization, which extend across the zero-field series limit to well inside the corresponding ionization continuum, with an interval of about 1.5 times the cr-splitting
