Abstract Rhodotorulic acid (I) was synthesized by a series of reaction starting from Nδ-tosyl-Nδ-benzyloxy-l-ornithine. Detosylation and acetylation of intermediate, cyclo-di-Nδ-tosyl-Nδ-benzyloxy-l-ornithyl (Ll-IX), afforded cyclo-di-Nδ-acetyl-Nδ-benzyloxy-l-ornithyl (Ll-XI), which, on reductive debenzylation, gave rhodotorulic acid.
