Comparison of mononuclear and dinuclear triple helical complexes of iron and cobalt (right) shows that metal ions in the dinuclear species have electronic environments essentially similar tothe mononuclear complexes. The formation of the complexes, however, occurs in a stepwise manner for the mononuclear complexes, but in a single self-assembly step for the dinuclear complexes.
