Abstract

Abstract Lead content of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and oats (Avena saliva L.) was related to lead extracted from 29 contaminated soils by several different extraction procedures. Correlation studies showed that 1N nitric acid extractable lead was significantly related to lead in lettuce; however, milder extraction with 0.01N nitric acid and 1N ammonium acetate provided a better correlation with lead content of oat shoots and roots. Soil properties, particularly soil pH, were also important when attempting to predict plant lead. Lead availability was related to soil pH, extractable aluminum, and total nickel. No relationship with organic matter was observed.
