Abstract

The alkalinity of NaCl crystals from various sources are reported with the method of its determination. Melt-grown crystals are usually more alkaline than natural rock salt. The alkalinity may vary in a melt-grown crystal. The alkalinity appears in melted salt, probably as a result of hydrolysis which produces NaOH and possibly by a reaction capable of liberating chlorine.
