Abstract

Reactions involving TaCl 5 and LiX (where X = NMe 2 , NEt 2 , NPr 2 n , NBu 2 n , NMeBu n , and NC 5 H 10 ) were shown to produce substantially the pentaderivatives TaX 5 . The thermal decomposition of TaX 5 (X = NMe 2 , NEt 2 , NPr 2 n , NBu 2 n , and NMeBu n ) was studied and only Ta(NMe 2 ) 5 could be sublimed unchanged. In other cases the main product of decomposition was a quinquevalent compound RN=Ta(NR 2 ) 3 and the secondary amine R 2 NH. Some olefin and quadrivalent Ta(NR 2 ) 4 were also detected and it is believed that decomposition involves the following sequence:[Formula: see text]This is in contrast to the behavior of niobium compounds, which appears to be:[Formula: see text]
