An application of the scattering theory of pressure broadening to rotational and vibration–rotation transitions is presented. The coupled equations for scattering in anisotropic potentials are derived for a number of systems of chemical interest; general methods for the solution of the coupled equations are discussed. The equivalence of the lowest (Born) approximation to the scattering theory of collision broadening, in the limit of classical relative motion, and the Anderson perturbation theory is demonstrated.
