Summary In a prospective study of 2949 singleton pregnancies the maternal serum folate level was assayed at booking in early pregnancy. No association was found between a low serum folate level and congenital malformation of the fetus either in the index pregnancy or in previous pregnancies. It is concluded that folic acid deficiency is not a cause of congenital fetal malformation.
