SUMMARY Staghorn calculi were found in 58 of 619 patients with urinary calculi. Females, patients with infected urine, and patients with a history of analgesic consumption were more likely to harbour staghorn calculi than males, patients with sterile urine, and patients denying heavy consumption of analgesics. Forty‐three per cent of the patients with staghorn calculi (25/58) had Proteus sp. grown on urine culture while more than half of all stone patients with proteus infections had staghorn calculi. Abnormalities of calcium metabolism were no more prevalent amongst patients with staghorn calculi than amongst patients with simple stones.
