Abstract

Abstract The quartz‐tube method for the combustion of organic samples before the determination of sulphur 1 has been improved. A new catalyst—ceria on alumina—has been produced which is as active as the previous vanadium oxide catalyst, and has the advantage of being unaffected by chlorine. The absorption train has also been much improved. These modifications are described in Part I. A rapid volumetric method, using disodium dihydrogen ethylenediaminetetra‐acetate, for the determination of low concentrations of sulphate ion is described in Part II. This method has been shown to give results of the same order of accuracy as those obtained by the standard gravimetric procedure.
