Abstract Spherical particles of nanoporous silica (with a diameter of 600 nm) containing mercaptopropylsilyl groups on the pore surface were synthesized by a modified Stöber method and subsequently silylated using (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. The spherical particles of organosilica formed an artificial opal structure by simply casting the suspension (water dimethylformamide mixture) on a mercaptopropylsilylated Si wafer.
