A functionalized biotin compound is synthesized and assembled on a graphene surface where the electrical and optical properties of graphene are retained. Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (among other surface-sensitive analytical techniques) is employed to monitor the surface binding in real time. This functionalization scheme can be easily generalized to other biologically relevant systems.
