Trial for correlation between structural defects and thermal stability in polyvinylchloride

Abstract

The double bonds (both internal and terminal) and the labile chlorine . atoms of a serie of PVC prepared in bulk, have been titrated through suitable methods (ozonization, bromination, reaction with thiophenol). The initial dehydrochlorination rate was measured in diluted solution. Bad correlation are observed. Fractionations show that the defects are concentrated in low molecular weight fractions in which a new type of labile chlorine atom (homoallylic) has been detected by high resolution NMR.
