Dynamics of Bone and Cartilage MetabolismEditors: SEIBEL, Markus J. (Univ of Heidelberg); ROBINS, Simon P. (Rowett Research Institute); BILEZIKIAN, John P. (Coll. of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia Univ.) Bibliographic Data: (ISBN: 0-12-634840-5, Academic Press, 1999, $149.95) hard cover Audiences: Bone Research Specialists, Orthopedic Specialists, Researchers, clinicians Subjects: Endocrinology/Metabolic Disease, Orthopedics, Rheumatology Other Info: The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. DESCRIPTION: Comprehensive coverage of the field of skeletal pathophysiology, with an emphasis on both bone and cartilage biology, is provided in this book. The extracellular matrix of bone and cartilage is addressed in terms of the components, structure and metabolism, and systemic markers of matrix metabolism. There are 46 chapters by 70 international authorities on metabolic bone disease. PURPOSE: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive textbook on skeletal (both bone and cartilage) pathophysiology. This is a worthwhile objective, since most texts in this area fail to focus much attention on cartilage biology. The editors’ objectives are very well met. AUDIENCE: The intended and actual audience includes basic and clinical researchers in metabolic bone disease, internists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, orthopedic surgeons, clinical biochemists, and others interested in management of patients with bone and cartilage diseases. The editors and contributors are all international experts in the field. ASSESSMENT: This is a comprehensive textbook in which the field of skeletal pathophysiology is extremely well covered. This is a current publication that includes many of the significant recent advances occurring in bone and cartilage biology. The editors do an outstanding job placing the advances in basic knowledge in clinical context. The book is compact with relatively short reviews of the areas covered, and is less encyclopedic than other recent textbooks in the field. SCORE: Weighted Numerical Score: 98 - *****
