Abstract

Abstract Measurements of the magnetic circular dichroism of the vibrationally induced transition 4 A 2g (F) → 4 T 1g (P) in Co 2+ doped CdF 2 crystals at temperatures from 2.5 to 300 K and at magnetic fields up to 52 kOe are reported. The measured line shape of the magnetic circular dichroism qualitatively corresponds to that calculated by Cho for the Jahn‐Teller effect of the 1 A 1g (S) → 1 T 1u (P) transition. Therefore, we give support to the explanation of the structure of this absorption band due to a Jahn‐Teller effect. The method of moments of Henry, Schnatterly, and Slichter is extended to vibrationally induced transitions. Assuming that vibrations belonging to one irreducible representation dominate, a reduced spin‐orbit coupling constant of λ′ = (70 ± 10) cm −1 is found for the 4 T 1g (P)state.
