The design and construction of a new solid state device for anaesthetizing the tympanic membrane by iontophoresis is described. In a pilot survey the performance of the device was completely satisfactory in 35 out of 36 patients. Emphasis is given to details of design and practical technique which are important if complications are to be avoided.
