Abstract A general statistical–mechanical description of the liquid–glass transition as a transition from ergodic to non-ergodic behaviour is presented. The description is based on the concept of the different atomic configurations of a glass. The discontinuities of the thermodynamic derivatives of second order, which characterize the glass transition, and the residual entropy are qualitatively explained in this framework.
