Abstract The alkaline decomposition of p‐tolylsulphonylmethylnitrosamide with potassium hydroxide in ethyl alcohol yields chiefly diazomethane, together with ethyl and potassium p‐toluenesulphonate. These products are compatible with a pseudo‐catalytic mechanism in which the ethylate ion plays a main role.
