Abstract

Abstract The power factor (PF) of a supply system can be split up in two parts: The displacement factor, due to the quadrature component of the fundamental current and the distortion factor, mainly due to harmonics in the current wave. The separate compensation of both terms has important advantages, but the controller for such separate compensation needs powerful resources to get a suitable dynamic behaviour if a frequency‐domain approach is used. This paper describes a controller based on a new method for splitting up the current wave into its fundamental component and its harmonic residue. The method uses a time‐domain approach and simplifies the closed‐loop control of power factor while giving a suitable dynamic response.
