Observation of catastrophic self-propelled self-focusing in optical fibres

Abstract

Observation of what appears to be a new guided-wave phenomenon which causes optical damage to the entire optical fibre transmission path at relatively low optical power levels is reported. Damage to the core manifests itself as periodic restructuring of the region, similar to that seen in self-focusing.
