Abstract A simple empirical equation has been obtained which relates both the shape and the size of the fracture zones to the stress distribution under which failure occurred. The relationship is demonstrated for the hackle boundary on soda-lime-silica glass specimens broken in bending. A possible physical interpretation is discussed in terms of the energetics of crack propagation.
